Special administrative regime

Residence and migration are regulated more tightly than in an ordinary mainland province. Visitors should not assume they can settle, buy into operations or work without the applicable legal status and permits.

Tourism

Guiding, accommodation, vessels and visitor services are important employers, but protected-area tourism depends on licences, routes, quotas and authorised operators.

Fisheries and farming

Artisanal fisheries and agriculture are part of local livelihoods while operating within conservation and biosecurity constraints.

Logistics

Freight distance raises costs for food, construction, maintenance and waste. Water and energy constraints make efficiency economically important.

Sustainable opportunity

Waste reduction, water efficiency, renewable systems, local supply chains and science-based conservation can create useful business activity. Sustainability claims should be measurable to avoid greenwashing.
