01

An economy connected to trade

Vietnam's economy combines manufacturing, services and agriculture, with substantial links to regional and global supply chains. Electronics, textiles and garments, footwear, food processing and machinery appear alongside domestic retail, logistics and tourism. Coffee, rice, seafood and other agricultural products connect rural production to export markets.

The National Statistics Office estimates average population in 2025 at 102.3 million and current-price GDP at about US$514 billion, or US$5,026 per person. These are dated annual measures, not a live population counter or a household-income figure. Realized foreign direct investment was estimated at US$27.62 billion; realized investment must not be confused with registered commitments.

Industrial locations differ in supplier base, workforce, power, land arrangements and access to transport. A port on a map does not establish the cost or lead time of a particular shipment. For commercial planning, compare a supplier's actual facility and route with documentary evidence, rather than treating the country as one uniform manufacturing location.

Ports, suppliers and commercial checks

Northern supply chains connect with Hanoi, Hải Phòng and surrounding industrial areas; southern ones connect with Ho Chi Minh City and its wider port and industrial region. Central Vietnam has its own production and transport links. Administrative changes make it especially important to confirm a company's current registered address and the physical place where work will be performed.

Before committing to a supplier, establish the legal entity, contracting authority, product specification, quality controls, delivery terms and payment arrangements. Samples, audit rights and a process for nonconforming goods belong in the agreement. A factory visit is useful, but it should be connected to the entity named in the contract.

For trade, consult Vietnam Customs and the relevant importing-country authority about classification, origin and documentary requirements. Preferential tariff treatment is not automatic merely because goods were shipped from Vietnam. Transport quotations should specify handling, storage, insurance and the allocation of risk.

Investment, currency and working in Vietnam

An investment decision needs current information about the sector, investor nationality, project form, land or premises and licensing requirements. This country overview is not a legal opinion on eligibility. Use the investment authority's current guidance and qualified local advisers for a specific project, including tax and employment questions.

The đồng is the domestic currency. Exchange rates, banking documents and cross-border payment requirements should be checked with the State Bank and the bank handling the transaction. Do not substitute a tourist cash-exchange quotation for a commercial settlement rate or assume that every foreign-currency transaction is permitted.

A visitor visa or visa exemption does not by itself settle whether a foreign national may work. Confirm the appropriate immigration status, work permit or exemption, employer obligations and residence arrangements for the actual activity. Verify an employer independently before traveling, retain control of your passport and be cautious about unusually attractive offers with unclear duties or location.
