🍷 Wine, Spirits & Drinking Culture
Ghana is not a wine-producing country — grape cultivation is negligible due to the tropical climate — but it has a rich tradition of palm wine, sorghum beer and strong distilled spirits. Akpeteshie is the national liquor: a fiery ~40–50% ABV distillate of fermented palm wine or sugar cane, served in small measures at roadside bars called "spots." Pito, a sorghum/millet beer, is the dominant drink of the north and is traditionally shared from a calabash.
Industrial beer is big business: Star, Club, Stone and Gulder are the favourites, usually served ice-cold with grilled tilapia on the Labadi or Kokrobite beaches. For a uniquely Ghanaian modern experience, try Adonko bitters — a herbal schnapps marketed as a wellness tonic that is sold by the shot in virtually every drinking spot in the country.
