🌏 Twelve Sites, a Millennium of History
Austria ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1992 and received its first inscriptions in 1996: the Historic Centre of Salzburg and the Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn. The list has since grown to 12 World Heritage Sites — 11 cultural and 1 natural — with several shared across borders with Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and other neighbours, a reflection of how thoroughly Austria's history is tangled up with the rest of Central Europe.
👑 Imperial Vienna and Salzburg
The Historic Centre of Vienna centres on the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard built where the city walls once stood, encircling the Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence, remains one of Europe's most complete Baroque ensembles. And the Historic Centre of Salzburg — birthplace of Mozart, dominated by the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress — earned its listing as an outstanding seat of ecclesiastical power at the heart of Europe.
🏔️ Landscapes and Engineering
The Wachau Cultural Landscape along the Danube and the Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut region — an alpine lake district with a salt-mining history stretching back to prehistory — represent Austria at its most photogenic. The Semmering Railway, completed in 1854 through the Alps, was one of the great engineering achievements of the industrial age and remains in active use. The most recent additions, inscribed in 2021, are the Great Spa Towns of Europe (Austria's contribution: Baden bei Wien) and a stretch of the Danube Limes, the Roman Empire's Central European frontier.

Several of Austria's sites — Wachau, Hallstatt, the spa towns — reward exactly the kind of unhurried travel Austria is built for: no site here needs to be "done" in an afternoon. Ten further locations sit on Austria's tentative list, so this count, like the country's cultural output generally, is still very much a work in progress.
