🍇 Mavrud and the Thracian Valley

Bulgaria's winemaking tradition runs deep — Thracian tribes were cultivating vines and worshipping Dionysus here thousands of years before Rome existed, and the Thracian Valley, stretching along the Maritsa river around Plovdiv, remains the country's largest and most important wine region today. Its signature grape is Mavrud: thick-skinned, late-ripening, low-yielding, and capable of genuinely age-worthy wines with dense black fruit, tannin and spice — often described, fairly, as Bulgaria's answer to Syrah. Modern wineries here increasingly ferment in clay amphorae, a direct nod to the same Thracian techniques archaeologists keep digging up.

In the far southwest, near the Greek border, the Struma Valley and its namesake town of Melnik — Bulgaria's smallest, with a population you could fit in a single apartment block — grow Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Broad-Leaf Melnik), an ancient, unique local variety found nowhere else on Earth. The Mediterranean-influenced microclimate here, hemmed in by the Pirin and Belasitsa mountains, produces elegant, peppery reds that locals insist have been grown on these hillsides longer than the town itself has existed.
