Åland’s drinks culture includes craft beer, local fruit products, spirits, and imported wine. Stallhagen is a local brewery whose historic-beer project is one part of its range. Do not confuse a ferry’s duty-free shop with the tax treatment of purchases made on the islands.

On the ferry between Stockholm and Turku — passing through the Åland archipelago, thousands of granite islands scattered across the Baltic like stepping stones — the duty-free shop was doing brisk business. Åland's unique status, autonomous Finnish territory with Swedish language and culture, extends to its drinking: Nordic aquavit tradition meets Baltic maritime heritage.
The Shipwreck Beer
Beer recovered from a wreck discovered near Föglö in 2010 was analyzed and used to develop Stallhagen Historic Beer 1842. This was a reconstruction project, not the origin of the brewery or the recipe behind every Stallhagen beer.
Check Stallhagen’s current visitor information for tours, tastings, the pub, and shop opening hours. Availability of historic and seasonal beers can change; contact the brewery before making a special journey for a particular bottle.

What Locals Actually Buy Duty-Free
Compare the current onboard price with prices at your destination rather than assuming every bottle is cheaper. Alcohol import allowances and age limits depend on the destination and circumstances of the journey; consult the relevant customs authority before purchasing.
Ferry shop selections differ between ships and sailings. For an Åland souvenir, compare local producers’ shops with the onboard selection instead of assuming that a particular local brand is unavailable on ferries.
