The Sovereign Base Areas are not a conventional commercial territory, but the 1960 settlement is no longer a sufficient description of their civilian planning framework. A Non-Military Development arrangement agreed by the UK and Cyprus in 2014 has operated since May 2022, aligning civilian development rights with those in the Republic subject to safeguards for military use. Cypriot residents farm, trade and work inside the SBAs, while everyday economic life is closely connected to the Republic. The euro, retail services and mobile networks make a visit feel Cypriot; the British military presence adds a distinctive employer and purchaser. Individual development proposals remain subject to the applicable planning and environmental requirements.
